My Little Piece of Ash

I thought you would burn far longer
Than you just have
My little darling in a silk sheet
I had tried to give you something to live for
Something to eat
But I guess my words fell short of safety
Short of grief
Because your lips cracked up in hunger
And I couldn’t produce enough heat
To keep those little bones alive
There’s something quite gruesome about loving someone who can’t survive
A thing that is destined to die
But I was sure I heard you in a dream
Heard you cry
And thought that we were bound to meet
Is it so utterly insane to miss something you never had
And didn’t even need
I reckon so
But while you were just an idea
A singles flake in a landscape of snow
I knew I would love you with all I had
